Foot Pain Without Injury: What Should I Do?

Living with pain is unacceptable, no matter your age. Pain is not a guaranteed consequence of aging. Pain is one of many ways that your body communicates that something is not right. It is a protective warning signal to let you know that something needs to be addressed. You should see a podiatrist with any foot pain to determine what is going on. Treat your foot pain in Jackson, Brick, NJ with Dr. Keith Rosenthal, Dr. Julian Sansone, and Dr. Rarama from The Foot and Ankle Center.

What are some causes of non-traumatic foot pain?

When a traumatic injury occurs to your foot, there is no question that you should visit a doctor. It is akin to sending up a Bat-Signal in the sky. Action must be taken. When there has been no traumatic injury but you're experiencing pain, it is not so obvious what actions you should take next. A doctor's visit is still necessary, just as necessary as with an injury to the foot. Some non-traumatic conditions that we treat in Jackson, Brick, NJ that cause foot pain are:

  • Arthritis: Arthritis can be systemic or more mechanical from wear and tear. Arthritis may show up in any part of the body, and this includes the location of your foot.
  • Deformities of the foot: This includes the formation of a bunion, hammertoes, and more. You may be born with a foot deformity or it may develop later in life.
  • Regularly wearing ill-footing footwear: Consistently wearing shoes that don't fit well can lead to the formation of a bunion, other deformities of the foot, or something called Morton's neuroma, which is a thickening of tissues surrounding a bundle of nerves in the foot.
  • Diabetes: Diabetic neuropathy usually attacks the foot, as this is the part of the body that is furthest away from the heart and likely to have decreased circulation to the area.
  • Viruses, infections, or fungus: The manifestation of a virus can show up as plantar warts, fungi can lead to athlete's foot, or ingrown toenails can result in infection.
  • Flat feet: Flat foot is a condition you may have been born with or can develop over time, as a result of fallen arches. In either case, lacking arch support may lead to foot pain.
  • Plantar Fasciitis: Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of foot or heel pain. It consists of an inflammation of the thick band of tissue that connects your heel to your toes.
  • Tendonitis: Achilles tendonitis or inflammation of another tendon in the foot can be caused by many activities other than sports.
